Roller Derby!

I just decided to join my local Chapter of Derby girls here in Rockyview County. I'm so thrilled to try this sport. It is new to me, although I haven't roller skated in years, I feel confidant that I can do this. It's rough and tumble and right up my alley. I ordered my gear online last night (hilariously called the 'fresh meat package' Lol) and went shopping for black and neon clothing to wear. Now I just have to wait patiently for my skates to come in so I can start practicing.

Who says you can't have a nice wedding for under $2000?

My fiancée and I are tying the knot this September and we are trying to do it as fun and cheap as possible. When we decided to wed, we agreed that we wanted fun, rather than fancy. I want people to come, eat and drink and have a blast. Not sit around going 'Wow. Everything matches... This is fun...' (*note my sarcasm)

We are having the wedding of our dreams (well, mostly mine) for under 2 grand. My wedding gown was free (gifted to me), my flowers are free (my mom owns the local flower shop in town where I also happen to be employed), the location of our ceremony is free (local Park overlooking a pond), So the only things we are paying for is the JP, booze, karaoke machine rental, cupcakes and all the little things (marriage licenses and liquor licenses, etc). Now not brag or anything but holy cow am I getting smokin' good deals on catering, booze, linens, photos and venue (some of which my parents are insisting on paying for...) I guess it boils down to who you know. And since my mother is in weddings she seems to be friends with everybody else involved in that industry.

It's all quite a relief really. I didn't want my wedding to be stressful on anybody for any reason. And it looks like its headed in that direction. Can't wait to post pictures of our wedding for you. It's going to be so much fun, we are going to have karaoke instead of a DJ, food (including a midnight snack), $2 drinks, candy buffet, a photo booth/kissing booth, billiards, Guitar Hero and cupcakes. Who doesn't LOVE cupcakes, right?

Kindergarten Graduation?... Really, people?...

My 6 year old 'Bubby' (*not his real name, LOL, it's short for my other nickname for him 'Bubby Boo Boo Face) just finished Kindergarten and is going into Grade 1 next year. I would like to ask all the parents out there: What is the point of 'Kindergarten Graduation'? REALLY? Some schools do a little ceremony where they hand out little fake diplomas and the teachers give really long speeches. All while the kids are squirming on the tiny benches wondering what the hell is going on.... Some other schools I have heard of even dress the graduating little Kindergartners in a full cap and gown for said useless ceremony. I, for one, was very relieved when I found out that Bubby's school wasn't going to subject him to one. WHEW! But it got me to thinking about how parents celebrate every minuscule milestone as if their kids are being crowned and given a throne to rule over a small country.

Alas, I am still shaking my head as to why parents feel the need to have their children graduate Kindergarten. I, for one, believe that even a monkey could graduate Kindergarten, and it seems weird that parents would want to celebrate something so normal. Yes, lets all give our kids a false sense of accomplishment in hopes that it will... What?... Boost their self esteem? I don't think most of the kids even know whats going on when they accept their little fake diploma and walk across the stage as their parents take a bagillion pictures.

All in all, I believe we should celebrate the real milestones with our children. Like, when they finally learn to share, or help mama around the house with chores. Or when they lose their first tooth, get their first haircut, can go to the bathroom by themselves, and brush their teeth without supervision. I think the little milestones are more important. Its all the little things that make our little ones grow up into functioning members of society. And I'm realizing more and more in my adult life, that just the simple fact that your child grows up to treat people with respect and can hold down a job, count proper change without using a calculator and being kind to living creatures IS THE BIGGEST milestone of all. Good Job Mama and Daddy for raising one of the few good ones. Cheers.
